Summer Vacation with PicLits
Intended students:
This is an intermediate-level speaking/listening class in a private university in the US. The students are from South Korea, and are part of a year-long exchange program. The class is a 1.5 hour class that meets 3 times a week. The students want to be able to communicate better with native English speakers. These students have a smartphone and/or tablet, and regularly use them for class activities.
Time needed:
15 minutes

Step 1: After teaching how to use the modal “should’ for giving advice, show the PicLit on the projector. To provide vocabulary scaffolding, elicit definitions from students and provide definitions when necessary.
Step 2: Tell students that they will alternate giving advice using “should” in pairs.
Step 3: Model activity by creating the first sentence: What should I bring to the beach? Sunblock. You should bring sunblock so you don’t get sunburnt.
Step 4: Monitor students and help students with forming sentences if necessary.
Step 5: Elicit responses from pairs.

Evaluation:
- Students may have trouble providing reasons for their advice. The teacher should be mindful of this while monitoring, and help students if they are struggling.
- Some students may not be familiar with the vocabulary listed on the picture, so make sure students can give explanations on their own when eliciting definitions. Prepare visuals beforehand if necessary.
