Song Jigsaw: What a Wonderful World
Intended students:
This is a beginner-level speaking and listening in a private university in the US. The students are from South Korea, and are part of a year-long exchange program. The class is a 1.5 hour class that meets 2 times a week. The students have just learned vocabulary for different colors.
Time needed:
30-40 min
Objectives:
Procedure:
Step 1: Before class: Cut the lyrics into strips, and make enough sets for groups (each group should have 1 set)
Step 2: Give instructions: You’re going to listen to a song several times, and you and your teammates have to put the sentences for the song lyrics in the right order. Listening to key words that we learned (colors) will help you. Now, get into your groups and listen to the song once before opening your envelopes.
Step 3: Put the students into small groups and play the song once (don’t show the video on screen yet).
Step 4: Tell students to start organizing the strips. Play twice (more if necessary).
Step 5: Play video on the screen and have groups check their answers.
Follow-up: As a homework assignment, have students comment on a class blog post that asks them the question: “What are some things that make you feel like you live in a wonderful world?”
Materials:
#1: Song Lyrics—What a Wonderful World by Louie Armstrong
I see trees of green, red roses too
I see them bloom for me and you
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world
I see skies of blue and clouds of white
The bright blessed day, the dark sacred night
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world
The colors of the rainbow, so pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces of people going by
I see friends shakin' hands, sayin' "How do you do?"
They're really saying "I love you"
I hear babies cryin', I watch them grow
They'll learn much more than I'll ever know
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world
Yes, I think to myself, what a wonderful world

Evaluation:
Some groups may finish earlier than others. If this is the case, have groups that finished early discuss the blog post question: “What are some things that make you feel like you live in a wonderful world?”
