Making Predictions (PowerPoint)
Intended students:
This is an intermediate-level speaking/listening class in a private university in the US. The students are from South Korea, and are part of a year-long exchange program. The class is a 1.5 hour class that meets 3 times a week. The students have just reviewed how to use the simple future (be going to, will).
Time needed:
30 minutes
Objectives:
Procedure:
Step 1: Before class, select several photos from the Eltpics Flickr page (Predictions) that students will use to make predictions using the simple future. Copy the pictures onto PowerPoint slides.
Step 2: After reviewing the simple future and making predictions, show the first picture on the PowerPoint slide and elicit responses for predictions.
Step 3: Explain to students that in pairs, they will make predictions based on different images. They must discuss and write down descriptive predictions. They can be as creative as they want, as long as it is appropriate.
Step 4: Have students sit with their partners. Start showing the PowerPoint slides, and give students several minutes to discuss and write down their sentences in between.
Step 5: After they are done, allow students to check their sentences for grammatical errors. Then, have them combine with another pair and share their predictions.
Step 6: Elicit from whole class.
Material:
Evaluation:
Determining the time necessary to discuss and write down sentences. The teacher should try to avoid giving too much time or too little time. One option is to pair lower-level students with higher-level students to try to even out the proficiency levels. Also, determine how much time to give for the first picture they work on (for example, 7 minutes), and see how long they actually take. Then, adjust the time for the following pictures. Lessen the number of pictures to use if time is an issue.
