Comic Strips for Grammar: Simple Future (be going to)
Intended students:
This is a high-beginner grammar class for a summer English program at a private language center. The students are from various countries including Germany, Switzerland, and China. The class is a 1.5 hour class that meets three times a week. The students have learned the simple future form (be going to).
Time needed:
10-15 minutes
Objectives:
Procedures:
Step 1: Hand out copies of comic strip to students.
Step 2: Give instructions—students need to complete the comic strip by filling in the blank conversation bubbles. They can be as creative as they’d like, but they must use the simple future form correctly. After they finish, they will share their comic strips with a partner and check for errors.
Step 3: Monitor students, make sure students are using the simple future.
Step 4: After students are done sharing their comic strips, have several students share with the whole class and correct if necessary.
Follow-up: Students write a detailed paragraph about Jane’s summer break plans in accordance to their comic strip using the simple future.

If students finish sharing their comic strips early and need more exposure to different sentences, have students combine with another pair and share again.

- to be able to explain future plans using the simple future
- to be able to use the simple future form in an authentic context
